Dispersals

Today I am letting go of (#12) some things I've kept out of a sense of obligation.

For the most part, these were gifts. I have a hard time feeling that I can dispose of a gift without in some way rejecting the giver. It's sort of magical thinking, I suppose. Certainly not rational, but there you go. I tend to feel rather guilty..... All the same, I'm letting go of a candle holder and a couple of books, a pin and some CD's, a dress. Call it guilty relief.

On an unambiguously cheerful note, the little baby socks I did on a whim have found a destination. I'll be sending them as part of a package for the Ravelry KFO group's current service project. That just makes me feel good.

The gifts do hang around and hold you hostage forever, don't they? I purposely took almost nothing from my grandparents' estate because I just don't want to take on more lifetime commitment stuff.

Congrats on being able to let those things go. I'm still hanging on to some very old gifts I don't want or will never use.

Guilt is a funny thing! I waited until my mother-in-law died before I got rid of some gifts from her. Still felt guilty about it, but, over it now! My mom is still with us. Can't toss yet.
My daughter apologized to me and gave away things I had given her. I told her not a problem. If you can't use it, toss it or give it to someone who can. I'd rather see it used. (This does not go for the handknit items I made as heirlooms!)

I agree. And the 'white elephants' you've been given by the people you like the most are the hardest to give away, IMO. Socklets are adorable!

That's always hard. Maybe they wouldn't even notice. Years ago, my mom gave us a Christmas decoration that was, um, not my taste at all. But I put it out year after year, thinking I'd hurt her feelings if I didn't. Well, the last two years, I didn't put it out to see if she'd notice, and she didn't (she's the type who would bring it up). So off to charity it went this year. I still feel a little guilty, but I really don't think she'll notice at this point.

Are those socks just knit regular style or did you somehow tuck them at the end of the leg so they'll stay on better? Can I see 'em on Saturday?
