An Old Reliable

Patons "Kroy", another basic, unassuming sock yarn. Seems like this stuff has been around forever....... The yarn above is new, but I've had the ones below (plus a few more colors) in my stash for a looong time.

All the same yarn, right? Well, more or less. The older version was made in Canada. The newer version is made in Slovenia. The older version is 85% wool/15% nylon. The newer version is 75% wool/25% nylon. The older version ran 203 yds/50 grams. The newer one is 192 yards/50 gms. Except for the cream colored one on the far right. Kroy used to come in two weights: "3-ply" and "4-ply" (I have a pattern booklet with some patterns written for each weight). The cream is 3-ply at 262 yds/50 gms. There used to be more solid colors (though there is still a nice range of neutrals). On the other hand, now there are variegated and self-patterning options.

To turn an old saying inside out: the more things stay the same, the more they change.

But it's still a good basic sock yarn.................

Can you believe I just noticed the Kroy sock yarn for the first time just a few days ago? I was at Joann's to check out the new Red Heart natural fiber offerings (though came up blank there -- perhaps I'll try Michael's -- I wasn't going to buy, just take a peek...) and I noticed the Croy...

For some reason this made me think about how ice cream used to come in half gallons, then 1.75 qt, and now 1.5 qt. And how yogurt used to come in 8 oz and has recently shrunk down to 6 oz.

Sorry, I'm always thinking about food.

I just bought your Hudson River Triangle pattern. I have about 410 yards of a slightly heavier yarn so I think I'll give it a try. Have never knitted into the first loop of a yarnover and dropped the second one, so this will be something new.

P.S. It was intersting to buy something through Ravelry. I remember reading something about this new change, but it was the first time I'd done it.

I have all those Kroy's too. I didn't realize the content had changed; I'll have to go take a look. I do know that the dark grey I used recently was more fluffy than the olive green I'm using now, but I'm sure they are both of the 3 ply, mid-age variety. When I heard they were discontinuing the 3ply/4ply I stocked up on 3 ply, but the colours I got are all boring and the gauge doesn't match most of the newer, more common sock yarns :( and I wasn't too thrilled with the newest version.
You should also do a comparison with Astra and Canadiana (they changed the label gauges recently, but I don't know if the yarns changed). I have some old, old Astra and the balls seem huge!
